Step by step
  1. leave before the birth = (weeks before the birth − weeks worked) × 7

    2026-10-06 – 2026-11-30: (8 − 0) × 7 = 56 days

  2. leave used before the birth = birth date − first day of leave

    2026-12-01 − 2026-10-06 = 56 days

  3. moved to after the birth = weeks worked × 7 + unused days

    0 × 7 + (56 − 56) = 0 days

  4. leave after the birth = 16 × 7 + moved to after the birth

    2026-12-01 – 2027-03-22: 16 × 7 + 0 = 112 days

  5. total leave = leave used before the birth + leave after the birth

    56 + 112 = 168 days

  6. nursing leave = the child’s first birthday − day back at work

    2027-03-23 – 2027-11-30: 12 months × 1.5 hours = 253 days

  7. half-time work = first birth

    2027-03-23 – 2027-05-21: 60 days = 60 days

Formula

leave before the birth = (weeks before the birth − weeks worked) × 7 days

leave after the birth = weeks after the birth × 7 + weeks worked × 7 + unused days

paternity leave = birth day + paternity days − 1

adoption leave = handover day + adoption weeks × 7 − 1

day back at work = last day of leave + 1

  • Weeks before the birth: 8 with one baby, 10 with a multiple pregnancy. Weeks after the birth: 16.
  • Weeks worked: with a doctor’s approval one can work until 2 weeks before the birth.
  • Unused days: after an early birth, the days of leave before the birth not used. When the birth comes before the leave starts, the whole period before the birth; for civil servants and contract staff also the days from the birth to the planned start.
  • Days: calendar days. The birth day is the first day of the leave after the birth.
  • Nursing leave: for employees, 1.5 hours a day until the child is 1. For civil servants and contract staff it starts at the return to work and is longer in the first 6 months.

Worked example

The example on this page is an employed mother with an expected birth date of 1 December 2026, and the baby comes that day. The leave before the birth starts on 6 October 2026 and ends on 30 November 2026: 56 days. The leave after the birth runs from 1 December 2026 to 22 March 2027, 112 days. The day back at work is 23 March 2027. The total is 168 days, 24 weeks. An employed father of the same baby is on leave from 1 to 10 December 2026.

Notes and limits

Before 1 May 2026 the leave after the birth was 8 weeks; the calculator applies the rules of the days the leave runs. It covers employees and civil servants from 2005, the self-employed from 1 October 2008 and 4/B contract staff from 14 May 2018. Every period and status is on the Turkish maternity leave periods by year page.

Half-time work is optional: for employees, unpaid leave for half the weekly hours; for a first, second and later birth, 60 / 120 / 180 days; +30 for a multiple birth; 360 for a disabled child. For civil servants, half the daily hours, given in months. Contract staff and the self-employed have none.

When the mother dies at or after the birth, the father takes the rest of her leave after the birth. For civil servants and contract staff the law says “as long as the period provided for the mother”; the employer can give the whole period.

The law sets the minimum: a collective or individual employment contract can give more. Staff with their own personnel law (armed forces, judges and prosecutors) should check that law. For the self-employed, the calculator shows the rest periods SGK pays the maternity benefit for. Unpaid leave and part-time work are not in the result; SGK pays the benefit, and the calculator does not work out the amount. The maternity leave guide explains the rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many weeks is maternity leave in Türkiye?

For employees and civil servants, 8 weeks before the birth and 16 after it, 24 in all; 26 with a multiple pregnancy. The leave after the birth went from 8 to 16 weeks on 1 May 2026 (Law no. 7578); for 4/B contract staff on 8 May 2026.

How many days is paternity leave?

For employees, 10 calendar days; before 1 May 2026 it was 5. Civil servants and 4/B contract staff get the same. A self-employed father (4/b) has no employer, so there is no paternity leave.

Is a civil servant’s maternity leave different?

The weeks before and after the birth are the same. The differences: a civil servant’s nursing leave starts after the maternity leave and is longer in the first six months; half-time work is given in months, not days; and a birth before the leave starts also adds the days in between. An employee of a public body under an employment contract follows the rules for employees.

Does an early birth shorten the leave?

No. The days you could not use before the birth move to after it. A birth before the leave starts moves the whole period before the birth. After a late birth the leave before the birth grows, and the leave after it stays whole.

I gave birth before 1 May 2026. Do the 16 weeks apply to me?

Yes if your leave was still running on 1 May 2026: SGK extended the report by 56 days without an application. If your leave had ended but 24 weeks since the birth had not passed on 1 April 2026, you could ask for 8 more weeks within 10 working days.

Do adoptive parents get leave?

Yes. One parent who adopts a child under 3, as an employee, civil servant or contract staff, gets 8 weeks from the handover. Employees and civil servants can then take half-time work.

Calculation rules

  • Since 1 May 2026, maternity leave (analık izni) for employees and civil servants is 8 weeks before the birth and 16 after it, 24 in all; a multiple pregnancy adds 2 weeks before the birth (Labour Law art. 74, Law 657 art. 104, Law 7578). For 4/B contract staff the same periods started on 8 May 2026. Before, the leave after the birth was 8 weeks; leave running on that day grew to 16 weeks.
  • With a doctor’s approval one can work until 2 weeks before the birth (3 weeks before May 2026). The weeks worked move to after the birth.
  • After an early birth, the days left unused before it move to after it (since 25 February 2011). A birth before the leave starts moves the whole period before the birth; for civil servants and contract staff the days from the birth to the planned start move too. After a late birth the leave before it grows and the leave after it stays whole.
  • Days are calendar days. The birth day is the first day of the leave after the birth. The day back at work is the day after the last day of leave; it can fall on a weekend or a holiday.
  • Nursing leave: employees get 1.5 hours a day until the child is one. Civil servants and contract staff get 3 hours a day for the first 6 months after the maternity leave and 1.5 hours for the next 6 (before 2011, civil servants got 1.5 hours until the child was one). There is no nursing leave during half-time work.
  • Half-time work is optional. Employees: after the maternity or adoption leave, unpaid leave for half the weekly hours for 60, 120 or 180 days (+30 for a multiple birth, 360 for a disabled child). Civil servants: half the daily hours for 2, 4 or 6 months (+1 month for multiples, 12 months for a disabled child). Contract staff and the self-employed have none.
  • Paternity leave counts calendar days: employees 10 days since 1 May 2026 (5 since 23 April 2015; none in law before), civil servants 10 days since 2011 (3 before), contract staff 10 days. When no start is given, it starts on the birth day.
  • Adoption leave is 8 weeks from the handover of a child under 3; one parent takes it. When the mother dies at or after the birth, the father takes the rest of her leave after the birth; the calculator works out her leave with the rules of the father’s status.
  • The self-employed (4/b, Bağ-Kur) have no employer: the calculator shows the rest periods SGK pays the maternity benefit for; there is no nursing leave, half-time work or paternity leave.
  • The law sets the minimum: a collective or individual employment contract can give more. Staff with their own personnel law (armed forces, judges and prosecutors) should check that law. A doctor’s report can extend the periods. Unpaid leave of up to 6 months (employees) or 24 months (civil servants) and the right to part-time work are not in the result. SGK pays the benefit; the calculator does not work out the amount.
