A mixed number is a whole number and a proper fraction written together, such as 3 2/5. To turn an improper fraction into a mixed number, divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient is the whole part, the remainder is the new numerator, and the denominator stays. For example, 17/5 = 3 2/5, or 3.4.
Where it appears in the formulas
The fraction simplifier uses whole part = (simplified numerator − remainder) / simplified denominator and remainder = simplified numerator − whole part × simplified denominator. For 17/5 the whole part is 3 and the remainder is 2. For a negative fraction both are negative: −7/3 has a whole part of −2 and a remainder of −1, so it is −2 1/3.
