Hours Calculator: Time Between Two Times
By Hesaplayıcı
The hours calculator finds the time between two clock times and the time you reach when you add or subtract hours and minutes. Enter times on the 24-hour or the 12-hour clock. The time comes in hours and minutes, decimal hours and total minutes; an end before the start is on the next day.
Worked example: From 09:00 to 17:30
Time
8 h 30 min
- Decimal hours
- 8.5 hours
- Total minutes
- 510 min
Step by step
Total minutes
time = end − start (+ 24:00 if the end is earlier)
17:30 − 09:00 = 510 min
Decimal hours
decimal hours = minutes / 60
510 / 60 = 8.5 hours
How to use
- In What to calculate, choose one of the two operations.
- For the Time between two times, enter the start and the end time. An end before the start is on the next day; for midnight, enter 24:00.
- To Add or subtract time, enter the start time, the operation and the hours and minutes. The result is the time reached and the day offset.
- Press Calculate.
To add up the start, end and break times of several days, use the time card calculator.
Enter the hour and the minutes in their own boxes; on the 12-hour clock, choose AM or PM next to them. To use the 12-hour clock, choose it in the Clock field next to What to calculate.
Formula
Time = end − start(+ 24 hoursif the end is earlier than the start)Decimal hours = minutes / 60Time reached = start ± time; each 24 hours past the day counts as one day.
The times become minutes after midnight before they are subtracted: 17:30 is 17 × 60 + 30 = 1,050 minutes. 24:00 is the end of the day, 1,440 minutes. Decimal hours are the minutes divided by 60: 30 minutes is 0.5 hours and 45 minutes is 0.75 hours.
Worked example
The example on the page finds the time from 09:00 to 17:30. The steps show the difference of the two times in minutes and the same time in decimal hours.
Limits
The calculator uses no dates and no time zones; one time is at most 24 hours. For the days between two dates, use the date difference calculator. Seconds are not used. On a night with a daylight saving change, the real time differs by 1 hour. The calculator does not compute pay: for Turkish overtime pay, enter the decimal hours in the Türkiye overtime calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate the hours between two times?
Subtract the start time from the end time. From 09:00 to 17:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes, or 8.5 hours. If the end is earlier than the start, add 24 hours: 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours.
How is a shift past midnight calculated?
Enter an end time earlier than the start; the calculator counts the end on the next day. For a shift that ends at midnight, enter 24:00 as the end.
What is 8 hours 45 minutes in decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours: 45 / 60 = 0.75, so 8.75 hours. Payroll and overtime sheets usually write hours in this decimal form.
How do I add up the hours of several days?
Enter the start, end and break time of each day in the time card calculator. It gives each day and the total in hours and minutes and in decimal hours.
Calculation rules
- Times are on the 24-hour clock; choose the 12-hour clock in the Clock field to enter and see 5:30 PM. An end before the start is on the next day: 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours. 24:00 is the end of the day; 00:00 to 24:00 is 24 hours.
- When the start and the end are the same, the time is 0. One time cannot pass 24 hours; add up the hours of several days with the time card calculator.
- Decimal hours are the minutes divided by 60: 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5 hours. The page rounds to two decimals; the API gives the full value.
- Seconds, dates and time zones are not used; on a night with a daylight saving change the real time differs by 1 hour.
- In the add or subtract mode, the day offset says how many days after the start day the result is (before it, when negative).
