Ideal Weight Calculator: 4 Formulas by Height
By Hesaplayıcı
The ideal weight calculator finds the ideal weight that four clinical formulas give for your height and sex: Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi. Choose your sex and enter your height in centimetres. It also shows the healthy weight range at a BMI of 18.5–24.9. The formulas are for adults of 152.4 cm or taller.
Worked example: A woman of 165 cm
Ideal weight (Devine)
56.9 kg
- Ideal weight (Robinson)
- 57.4 kg
- Ideal weight (Miller)
- 59.8 kg
- Ideal weight (Hamwi)
- 56.4 kg
- Healthy weight range: from
- 50.4 kg
- Healthy weight range: to
- 67.8 kg
Step by step
inches over 5 ft = height / 2.54 − 60
inches over 5 ft = 165 / 2.54 − 60 = 4.96 in
Ideal weight (Devine)
Devine = 45.5 + 2.3 × inches over 5 ft
Devine = 45.5 + 2.3 × 4.96 = 56.9 kg
Ideal weight (Robinson)
Robinson = 49 + 1.7 × inches over 5 ft
Robinson = 49 + 1.7 × 4.96 = 57.4 kg
Ideal weight (Miller)
Miller = 53.1 + 1.36 × inches over 5 ft
Miller = 53.1 + 1.36 × 4.96 = 59.8 kg
Ideal weight (Hamwi)
Hamwi = 45.5 + 2.2 × inches over 5 ft
Hamwi = 45.5 + 2.2 × 4.96 = 56.4 kg
Healthy weight range: from
weight at BMI 18.5 = 18.5 × height²
weight at BMI 18.5 = 18.5 × 1.65² = 50.4 kg
Healthy weight range: to
weight at BMI 24.9 = 24.9 × height²
weight at BMI 24.9 = 24.9 × 1.65² = 67.8 kg
How to use

Formula
Inches over 5 ft = height (cm) / 2.54 − 60Devine: men 50 + 2.3 × inches over 5 ft; women 45.5 + 2.3 × inches over 5 ftRobinson: men 52 + 1.9 × inches over 5 ft; women 49 + 1.7 × inches over 5 ftMiller: men 56.2 + 1.41 × inches over 5 ft; women 53.1 + 1.36 × inches over 5 ftHamwi: men 48 + 2.7 × inches over 5 ft; women 45.5 + 2.2 × inches over 5 ftHealthy weight range = 18.5 × height (m)² to 24.9 × height (m)²
Inches over 5 ft is how many inches your height is above 152.4 cm; one inch is 2.54 cm. The formulas give kilograms. Devine was published in 1974, Robinson and Miller in 1983, Hamwi in 1964; the constants are the kilogram forms collected by Pai and Paloucek. Results are rounded to 0.1 kg. The main result is Devine, which is also the predicted body weight formula of the US ARDS Network.
Worked example
The worked example on this page shows a woman of 165 cm. The steps give the inches over 5 ft, the result of each formula and the healthy weight range from BMI.
Limits
The formulas are not defined below 5 ft (152.4 cm), so the calculator gives no result there. Shorter adults can find their healthy weight range with the BMI calculator. The formulas ignore muscle and bone build, age and ethnic background, and they can differ by a few kilograms. The result is not medical advice; ask your doctor about a target weight.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which ideal weight formula is right?
No single formula is right; all four estimate from height and sex only and can differ by a few kilograms. The calculator puts Devine first because it is the formula most used in clinical practice.
I am shorter than 152 cm. How do I find my ideal weight?
These formulas are not defined below 5 ft (152.4 cm). Use the BMI 18.5–24.9 range for your height; the BMI calculator shows it for any height.
Is the ideal weight the same as the healthy weight range?
No. The ideal weight formulas give one value. The healthy weight range is the weights at a BMI of 18.5–24.9, which WHO counts as normal.
Why do the formulas use inches?
They were developed in the United States and add weight for every inch over 5 ft. The calculator turns centimetres into inches by dividing by 2.54.
Calculation rules
- Each formula adds a fixed weight for every inch (2.54 cm) over 5 ft (152.4 cm): Devine (1974), Robinson (1983), Miller (1983) and Hamwi (1964). The constants are the kilogram forms collected by Pai and Paloucek (Ann Pharmacother 2000).
- The formulas are not defined below 152.4 cm (BDA PENG, 2022); the calculator gives no result there. For shorter adults, use the BMI range.
- The main result is Devine: it is the formula most used in clinical practice and the same as the ARDSnet predicted body weight formula.
- The healthy weight range is the weight at a BMI of 18.5 and of 24.9 for your height. Results are rounded to 0.1 kg.
- For adults only. The formulas ignore muscle and bone build, age and ethnic differences. The result is not medical advice.
