Numerator: The number above the fraction bar. It tells how many equal parts of the whole you take: in 3/4 the numerator is 3.

Where it appears in the formulas
The fraction simplifier uses simplified numerator = numerator / GCD: for 84/126 that is 84 / 42 = 2. A negative denominator moves its sign to the numerator: the simplified numerator of 6/−8 is −3, and the fraction becomes −3/4.
