Tip Calculator: Tip, Total and Split per Person
By Hesaplayıcı
The tip calculator finds the tip, the total of the bill and the tip, and each person’s share from the bill amount and a tip percent. You can also enter a fixed tip. As options, it tips on the amount before tax and rounds each share up to a whole unit; the rounding difference goes to the tip.
Worked example: A 10% tip on a bill of 1,200, split by 4
Tip
120
- Tip percent
- 10.00%
- Total (bill + tip)
- 1,320
- Share per person
- 330
- Tip per person
- 30
Step by step
Tip
tip = bill × tip percent / 100
tip = 1,200.00 × 10 / 100 = 120
Total (bill + tip)
total = bill + tip
total = 1,200.00 + 120.00 = 1,320
Share per person
share per person = total / people
share per person = 1,320.00 / 4 = 330
Tip per person
tip per person = tip / people
tip per person = 120.00 / 4 = 30
How to use
- Enter the Bill amount: the amount on the receipt, tax included.
- Choose the Tip type: enter a Tip percent, or a Tip amount for a fixed tip.
- To split the bill, enter the Number of people.
- Under More options, choose to tip on the amount before tax (with the tax rate in the bill), or to round each share up to a whole unit.
- Press Calculate. You get the tip, the total, the share per person and the steps.
Formula
tip = bill × tip percent / 100total = bill + tipshare per person = total / peopleamount before tax = bill / (1 + tax rate / 100), when you tip before taxrounding difference = rounded share × people − total
The bill is the amount the receipt asks for; it includes the VAT or sales tax. The tip percent is the tip as a percent of the bill (or of the amount before tax). With rounding, each share goes up to the next whole unit and the difference goes to the tip.
Worked example
The example on this page adds a percent tip to a bill that four people share. The steps first give the tip, then the bill plus the tip, and last each person’s share of the total and of the tip. Change the amount, the percent and the number of people for your own bill.
Limits
The calculator suggests no tip percent: a tip is voluntary, and the custom changes by country and service. It does not work out tax on the tip or a business’s service charge. The bill is split equally; for different amounts per person, work out each share on its own. The before-tax option takes the tax out of the bill at one rate. Results are rounded only when you choose rounding; the page shows amounts to at most 2 decimals.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percent and divide by 100. A 10% tip on a bill of 1,200 is 1,200 × 10 / 100 = 120, so the bill and the tip come to 1,320.
How do you split the bill and the tip?
Add the tip to the bill and divide by the number of people. A total of 1,320 split by 4 is 330 each, of which 30 is the tip.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Many people tip on the total on the receipt, the calculator’s default. If you choose the amount before tax, the calculator takes the tax out first: on a bill of 2,200 with 10% tax, the amount before tax is 2,000, so a 10% tip is 200 instead of 220.
What does rounding the share up do?
Everyone pays a whole amount and the difference goes to the tip. With a 15% tip on a bill of 84.50 split by 3, each share is 32.39; rounded up, each person pays 33 and the 1.83 difference makes the tip 14.50.
What percent of the bill is a fixed tip?
Divide the tip by the bill and multiply by 100. A tip of 100 on a bill of 640 is 100 / 640 × 100 = 15.63%. With a fixed tip, the calculator shows this percent too.
Calculation rules
- The bill amount is the amount on the receipt, tax included. By default the tip is a percent of that amount. With "The amount before tax", the tax comes out first: amount before tax = bill / (1 + tax rate / 100); the tip is a percent of that amount, and the total is still bill + tip.
- With a fixed tip, the calculator also shows the tip as a percent of the bill (or of the amount before tax).
- The bill and the tip are split equally. With rounding up, each share goes up to the next whole unit (1 dollar, 1 euro); the difference goes to the tip. The calculator rounds nothing else; the page shows amounts to at most 2 decimals.
- The calculator suggests no rate and does not tax the tip: a tip is voluntary, and the custom changes by country and service.
