How Credit Card Interest Is Calculated in Türkiye

Region: TürkiyeHesaplayıcı3 min read

Short answer

Credit card interest in Türkiye is contractual interest on the balance unpaid by the due date. One month of interest is the balance left times the monthly contractual rate. If you pay the 4,000 TRY minimum on a 20,000 TRY balance, the 16,000 TRY left costs 520 TRY a month at 3.25%, 676 TRY with KKDF and BSMV.

Formula

balance left = statement balance − your payment

one month of interest = balance left × monthly contractual rate

interest with taxes = one month of interest × (1 + KKDF + BSMV)

  • statement balance: the total on your card statement
  • your payment: what you pay by the due date; at least the minimum payment
  • monthly contractual rate: your card’s monthly rate as a decimal (0.0325 for 3.25%), without KKDF and BSMV
  • KKDF and BSMV: the taxes a bank adds to the interest; both 15% (0.15) in 2026

The minimum payment is 20% of the statement balance for a card limit of 50,000 TRY or less and 40% above (BDDK Board Decision 10970, 26 September 2024).

Step-by-step example

A card with a 40,000 TRY limit, a 20,000 TRY statement balance and a 3.25% monthly contractual rate; you pay only the minimum:

  1. Find the minimum payment: the limit is not above 50,000 TRY, so the share is 20%; 20,000 × 0.20 = 4,000 TRY.
  2. Find the balance left: 20,000 − 4,000 = 16,000 TRY.
  3. Find one month of interest: 16,000 × 0.0325 = 520 TRY.
  4. Add the taxes: 520 × (1 + 0.15 + 0.15) = 676 TRY; that is what reaches the statement.
  5. See what paying more does: if you pay 8,000 TRY, one month of interest on the 12,000 TRY left is 390 TRY, 507 TRY with taxes.

The rates in the examples are the central bank’s maximums, not your card’s rate; take your own rate from your statement.

The central bank’s maximum rates

The Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye (TCMB) sets the maximum monthly contractual rate on credit card transactions by the statement balance. The rates since 1 January 2026:

Statement balance Maximum monthly contractual rate
Under 30,000 TRY 3.25%
30,000–180,000 TRY 3.75%
Above 180,000 TRY 4.25%

If you pay the minimum and carry the rest, in each band:

Statement balance Card limit Monthly rate Minimum payment Balance left One month of interest With taxes
20,000 TRY 40,000 TRY 3.25% 4,000 TRY 16,000 TRY 520 TRY 676 TRY
100,000 TRY 150,000 TRY 3.75% 40,000 TRY 60,000 TRY 2,250 TRY 2,925 TRY
200,000 TRY 300,000 TRY 4.25% 80,000 TRY 120,000 TRY 5,100 TRY 6,630 TRY

What changes the interest

  • What you pay. Interest runs only on the unpaid part. If you pay the whole statement balance by the due date, no contractual interest arises.
  • Paying late. If you pay less than the minimum, late interest applies to the unpaid part.
  • Days. Banks charge interest day by day from the transaction dates. The interest on your statement can differ from this one-month estimate.
  • Taxes. Banks add 15% KKDF and 15% BSMV to the interest; the calculator shows both. Check the rates on your statement.
  • Cash advances. Cash advance interest is not part of this calculation.

Worked example: A 40,000 TRY limit, a 20,000 TRY statement, 3.25% a month

Minimum payment

4,000 TRY

Minimum share
20.00%
Balance left after the minimum
16,000 TRY
One month of interest on it
520 TRY
KKDF
78 TRY
BSMV
78 TRY
One month of interest with taxes
676 TRY
Step by step
  1. Minimum share

    minimum share = 20% (limit ≤ 50,000 TRY) or 40% (limit > 50,000 TRY)

    minimum share = 20% (limit 40,000 ≤ 50,000) = 20.00%

  2. Minimum payment

minimum payment = statement balance × minimum share

    minimum payment = 20,000 × 20% = 4,000

  3. Balance left after the minimum

remaining balance = statement balance − minimum payment

    remaining balance = 20,000 − 4,000 = 16,000

  4. One month of interest on it

contractual interest = remaining balance × monthly contractual rate

    contractual interest = 16,000 × 3.25% = 520

  5. KKDF

KKDF = contractual interest × KKDF rate

    KKDF = 520 × 15% = 78

  6. BSMV

BSMV = contractual interest × BSMV rate

    BSMV = 520 × 15% = 78

  7. One month of interest with taxes

interest with taxes = contractual interest + KKDF + BSMV

    interest with taxes = 520 + 78 + 78 = 676
