What Is a Tax Bracket?

Definition

Tax Bracket: A range of income in the income tax tariff that is taxed at one rate. Each rate applies only to the part of the taxable income that falls in its range.

A tax bracket is a range of income taxed at one rate. A progressive income tax tariff is a list of brackets with rising rates. Each rate applies only to the part of the income inside its bracket. A higher bracket taxes only the excess, not the whole income.

Where it appears in the formulas

The tax of a bracket is amount in the bracket × bracket rate; the income tax is the sum over the brackets. The income tax calculator shows each bracket on its own row; the notice pay calculator applies one bracket rate that you choose.
