How to Calculate Annual Leave in Türkiye

Region: TürkiyeHesaplayıcı3 min read

Short answer

In Türkiye, each full year of service earns its own annual leave: 14 working days for years 1 to 5, 20 for years 6 to 14 and 26 from year 15. Workers aged 18 or under, or 50 or over, get at least 20 days; underground workers get 4 more. There is no leave before one year.

Formula

annual leave = leave by service (14, 20 or 26 days)

  • age 18 or under, 50 or over: at least 20 days
  • underground work (mines, tunnels): + 4 days

leave pay = last gross wage / 30 × unused days

Service counts the start day and the last day, and probation counts too. The leave is earned on the day a year is complete: a worker who starts on 01.06.2024 completes one year on 31.05.2025 and can take the leave from 01.06.2025. The age is taken on the day the leave year starts, the anniversary of the start date.

Leave by service

Full years of service Annual leave Age 18 or under, 50 or over Underground work
under 1 year none none none
years 1–5 14 days 20 days 18 days
years 6–14 20 days 20 days 24 days
year 15 and on 26 days 26 days 30 days

At the limits: exactly 5 years of service gives 14 days, because the law includes 5 years in the first band. A worker with 5 years and 1 day also gets 14 days in this leave year; 20 days start when the 6th year is complete. From the 15th year the leave is 26 days.

The 4 underground days apply to leave years that start on or after 11 September 2014 (Law 6552). The law does not say whether an underground worker aged 50 adds the 4 days to the 20-day minimum. The annual leave calculator takes the reading that favours the worker and gives 24 days.

Step-by-step example

Start date 1 February 2023, date of birth 10 June 1975, day checked 28 September 2026:

  1. Service, both days counted, is 3 years 7 months 28 days. The 3rd leave year started on 1 February 2026.
  2. 3 years of service give 14 days.
  3. On 1 February 2026 the worker is 50, so the 20-day minimum applies. This leave year gives 20 days.
  4. The 4th leave year starts on 1 February 2027; the worker will be 51 and gets 20 days again.

If the same worker leaves with 20 unused days and a last gross wage of 45,000 TRY: the daily gross wage is 45,000 / 30 = 1,500 TRY, and the gross leave pay is 1,500 × 20 = 30,000 TRY.

Weekends and holidays

Leave days are working days. Weekly rest days, national holidays and public holidays inside the leave do not count (art. 56). The leave can be split if both sides agree; one part must be at least 10 days.

Leave pay when the job ends

However the contract ends, the unused leave days are paid at the last wage (art. 59). The amount is wage: income tax, stamp duty and the SGK premium are deducted. Service at different workplaces of the same employer is added up for the leave (art. 54).

Worked example: Started on 1 March 2019, 12 unused days on 28 September 2026

Step by step
  1. Full years

service = day checked − start date (both days counted)

    service = 2026-09-28 − 2019-03-01 = 7 years 6 months 28 days = 7 years

  2. Leave of this leave year

annual leave = 14, 20 or 26 days by service; at least 20 days at age 18 or under, 50 or over; + 4 days in underground work

    annual leave = 20 (service 7 years → 20; age 35) = 20 days

  3. Leave of the next leave year

leave of the next leave year = 14, 20 or 26 days by service; at least 20 days at age 18 or under, 50 or over; + 4 days in underground work

    leave of the next leave year = 20 (service 8 years → 20; age 36) = 20 days

  4. Days to the next full year

days to the next full year = last day of service year 8 − day checked

    days to the next full year = 2027-02-28 − 2026-09-28 = 153 days

  5. Daily gross wage

daily gross wage = monthly gross wage / 30

    daily gross wage = 50,000.00 / 30 = 1,666.67 TRY

  6. Gross leave pay

leave pay = monthly gross wage / 30 × unused days

    leave pay = 50,000.00 / 30 × 12 = 20,000.00 TRY
